Directed by Shoaib Mansoor

Starring

Mahira Khan as Sarah

Haroon Shahid as Aami

Zarrar Khan as Sultan

Shoaib Mansoor has a background, marked by filmmaking where he so consistently intertwines social messages with entertainment and this one looks the same. Following in the strides of his precedent movies, Khuda Ke Liye and Bol, Verna hopes to handle some of society's greater issues in regards to women, which we don't ordinarily discuss openly.

With the current launch of Verna’s trailer we can delineate that the film rotates around the issue of female oppression. Director Shoaib Mansoor has again yielded his talent of making music artists act. After extracting a commendable performance from Atif Aslam in Bol, he has managed to make singing sensation, Haroon Shahid, play the lead part (admirably well apparently) with Mahira Khan and Zarrar as the antagonist in Verna.

Verna is another attempt at discussing intricate and intriguing themes after “Bol”. The three minute trailer, in acute earnestness, starts off as a romantic flick until the themes gradually become more intense. It is through Mahira’s impassioned performance that we see that this is clearly a thriller. Gradually making its way into the display of countless intricacies, this movie seems to be a revenge saga and an entanglement of love, politics and violence.

The trailer starts off with a happily married couple. As imagery flashes across the screen, it gradually transcends into a more political and controversial scenario. With each passing second, you visually perceive an incipient layer of suspense integrated within each carefully crafted shot. Director Mansoor is known to make such enigmatic trailers where you will be familiar with the theme but not the exact plot of the film.

The movie tries to highlight the importance of gender equality and the dialogues draw attention towards the long waged war against patriarchy.

It's somewhat fascinating to see exactly where this commix of genres will wind up because despite not giving too much of the premise away, the trailer is exceptionally fierce and accomplished what it was meant to do; it has peaked our interest and we’re nothing if not curious to see what this is all about.

This political thriller movie “Verna” is all set to hit cinemas on 17th November 2017.
