Mahira Khan and Saba Qamar are undoubtedly two of the most interesting female protagonists at the time in South Asia, both at the top of their game. While Pakistani leading males Fawad Khan and Ali Zafar share the screens with top Indian actors in the glamorous Bollywood world, these leading ladies also made their mark quiet impressively last year making us Pakistanis feel as proud as ever.

Their work has not only been applauded by top media persons in both Bollywood and in the Pakistani film industry, it has also more recently been pointed out by Eastern Eye, a UK-based publication, which announced Mahira Khan and Saba Qamar as the top Bollywood debuts of 2017.

Mahira’s first Bollywood performance was in Raees, opposite the King of Romance himself, Shah Rukh Khan. According to a critic, Anna MM Veticad, Mahira was “naturally easy”. Though Mahira’s role wasn’t as bold or strong in Raees as it was in her latest Pakistani release Verna, but the immense praise and love she gathered even in that role speaks volumes. Considered as Pakistan’s most popular and highest-paid female actor, she’s also the first Pakistani actress to join Bollywood’s 100-crore club.

Another one on the list was the versatile Saba Qamar. We see her as a furious strong headed woman in her highly acclaimed television drama Baghi and she brings the same energy to her Indian film Hindi Medium where she is casted alongside the multi-talented Irrfan Khan.

Irrfan recalls that he saw Saba’s work on Youtube and was instantly fascinated which is why he recommended her to the director and producer. He also said, “Sometimes the co-actors become very important because your on-screen chemistry plays a vital role in the film.”

Sajal Aly and Adnan Siddiqui also made their Bollywood debut this year with the film Mom alongside Siridevi, but their name did not make it to the list. Nevertheless both were applauded for their intense performances.
