While the plot and character names for A Quiet Place have been kept strictly under wraps so far, the teaser trailer is out and within one and a half minutes, it does what any good trailer should do. It excites us, peaks our interest, drives our curiosity to the extent where we want to watch it right now.
With a few well-placed taglines and an absolute lack of dialogue, this trailer is jarringly creepy. Blunt and Krasinski are a couple living in a house in the woods with their two children. Yet Blunt takes care not to step on a single leaf as she walks, nobody utters a word, dinner talk is conversation made through sign language. We’re already intrigued as the words flash across the screen, “if they can’t hear you, they can’t hunt you.” That is how to intrigue an audience.

Everything goes south as the children knock over a lamp. The characters are terrified and their fear is palpable. So is ours for that matter. We have no idea what’s coming to get these people and what’s out there. But the build up to it is so incredibly intense, the trailer doesn’t give you an option but to be curious. A thud is heard, a red bulb switches on and suddenly, we’re engrossed.
While Krasinski is primarily a comedian (you might know him from The Office) he’s a great actor and it shows here. Since there’s little dialogue, the actors need to do a lot of facial work and incorporate expressive body language. Krasinski is at the helm of the project, directing and writing A Quiet Place. Add to that the fact that this is his debut feature, a bold ambitious feat, I wonder if excitement is premature and a better option would be holding it off.
However, I am reminded of comedian Jordan Peele’s extraordinary thriller debut earlier this year, Get Out; a clever, subversive commentary which was maddeningly chilling. I am given hope in Krasinski’s vision of A Quiet Place and hope that, not long from now, I find myself watching a similarly exceptional piece of work.
A Quiet Place is set to release in April.
