The latest trailer of the black comedy Kaalakaadi has drugs, sex, and obscenity in abundance, perhaps more so than a two minute trailer should carry. It’s by the same people that made Delhi Belly so it’s no surprise.

Saif Ali Khan portrays the straight-as-an-arrow, suave, corporate guy who doesn’t smoke, doesn’t do drugs, never parties and generally lives a clean healthy life. He’s accordingly shocked when he’s diagnosed with stomach cancer one day. He is encouraged to do whatever he wants to do as it really doesn’t matter that much anymore. And so he goes the Hangover route and becomes the party animal he never used to be.

During his comically depressing journey, he meets interesting characters played by Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal who as it turns out are transporting drugs worth Rs 1 crore.

The poster does a great job of conveying the tone of the movie; sort of quirky, funny, and not taking itself too seriously. Saif’s hair is tied in multiple ponytails with fluorescent rubber-bands while he holds a gun in one hand and a drink in the other. It’s simple and yet it works.

Following a raid on a rave party, several goof ups by the comic relief characters and some rash driving, Saif Ali Khan’s character is shown to be having a great time. We’re actually interested in knowing about this man, his journey and how he’ll continue to deal with his illness.

Directed by Akshat Verma, who also helmed Delhi Belly (which explains the similarity), Kaalakaandi boasts of an ensemble cast sure to add to the entertainment value.

The director’s bold dark comedy appears to be extremely promising. The trailer doesn’t give away too much but just enough to raise our curiosity. Adding to the apparent wit, Kaalakaandi is Marathi slang for when things go disastrously wrong. Take into account that oddball poster, and it’s clear that Kaalakaandi is a self-aware film. It wants to have shock value and an R rated good time but still have a plot and direction. Hopefully, the film itself will deliver.

After facing an order for 73 cuts from the CBFC and a delayed release date for the trailer, Saif Ali Khan’s Kaalakaandi is all set to release on 12th January.
